Dallis Fontenot
Executive VP, Engineered Structures, Inc. (ESI)
What traits are most important to you when hiring for, or promoting individuals within, your company?
We look for individuals who demonstrate our company’s core values.
We look for people who are:
Dedicated to a relentless pursuit of safety; to providing first-choice service, quality, and value; to growing personally, professionally, and as a team; to their word, their work, and each other.
Dependable. People who deliver on their promises, are resilient when challenged, persistent in their delivery, and always reliable.
Dynamic. People who drive progress and take initiative. Who harness the diverse strengths of the team to meet project, customer, and market demands of tomorrow.
What tips do you have, or what lessons have you learned, that would help others working to advance their careers?
Start with Your Strengths
Adopt a 10-10-10 rule to create your strategic development roadmap
Study your top 10 talents (I use the CliftonStrengths Assessment)
Gain clarity on what you do better than 10,000 other people
Get to work toward 10,000 hours of practice to gain mastery
Aim those strengths at a company need and that is where career advancement takes off.
Don’t underestimate the power of “Blooming Where you are Planted”.
Find a growing company (not a perfect company) with good people and learn as much as you can, wherever you can, from whomever you can.
Be open to the idea that the ‘villain’ in your story could be a source of your growth. Not everyone has the kind of courage it takes to lean into difficulty and adopt an ownership mindset, but for the brave, there is much that can be learned in that uncomfortable space.
